HUMMINGBIRD CHECKLISTS
by STATE (U.S.)

(updated 07 January 2015)

Scroll down for a complete list of hummingbird species found in each state. Only Hawaii has no hummingbird species at all.

Lists are compiled primarily from official checklists approved by states' ornithological records committees; in some cases, published lists may lag behind species confirmed by hummingbird banders. Status terminology below (e.g., "provisional," "hypothetical," etc.) is based upon that used by each state's committee and may vary from state to state. For some states, "n" means the species breeds there.

Links are provided to on-site photos to help with field identification of many species.

Please contact the WEBMASTER with corrections or additions and especially if a species that nests is a particular state is not so indicated below.

PLEASE NOTE:

Ruby-throated Hummingbirds appear in GREEN if they breed in that state, in RED if they are rare there or simply pass through in migration.

Although casual observers in the western U.S. frequently report "ruby-throats" at their feeders, it's important to remember males of several species have metallic red throat feathers but are NOT Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. Even more complications with identification can result because females and young males of many species look even more like female or young male Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. Please be very cautious with identification. (Conversely, Ruby-throated Hummingbirds may be more common west of the Rockies than we realize, mostly because observers assume they are some other species.)

NOTE: Although Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are the primary focus of "Operation RubyThroat: The Hummingbird Project", we are also interested in other hummingbird species--especially vagrants that appear in winter (mid-October through mid-March) in the eastern U.S. If you know of a wintering hummingbird east of the Mississippi, please report it to the Research Department at Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History. We will contact a local hummingbird bander about capturing the bird, identifying and banding it, and releasing it unharmed.
