-- HUMMINGBIRD GALLERY Room #20 --

The Quicktime movie above was taken by Becky Laskody of Chapel Hill, North Carolina on 3 August 2003. The movie depicts what is apparently a true albino Ruby-throated Hummingbird that began visting her feeder in late July. True albinos have all white plumage and light-colored bills that are pinkish or orange-ish, as in the bird in this sequence; the eye and foot color cannot be determined from these movie images or from the still photo below, but they also would be pink. True albinos are much rarer than light colored "leucistic" hummingbirds that have dark bills, eyes, and feet.

A complete account of our visit to Chapel Hill to capture and band the Laskody family's rare white hummer is on the Web site for Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History at Banding the Albino Hummingbird.
