-- HUMMINGBIRD GALLERY Room #13 --

Sometimes a hummingbird will stare you down bill-to-nose right through the kitchen window. This Ruby-throated Hummingbird is an immature male, as indicated by the few red feathers beginning to appear on its gorget. Like many young males RTHUs, this one also has dark greenish-black streaking on its throat. Photo taken by Bill Steiner, Kokomo IN, 30 August 2002.

Although we doubt Zinnias have enough nectar to satisfy the sugar cravings of a Ruby-throated Hummingbird, this young male is probably attracted to the red color and will learn soon enough whether there's food to be found in the flower. The immature male Ruby-throated Hummingbird in this photo appears to have one eye on a feeder port and one on the Yellow Jacket that probably wants its own swig of sugar water. Photo taken August 2002 by Joanne Bartling of Washington Township NJ.
