This pen-and-ink rendering of a female Ruby-throated Hummingbird on her nest was commissioned as the cover illustration for The Piedmont Naturalist, Vol. 1--1986 by Bill Hilton Jr. The drawing was done by Russell E. Rogers Jr., who had been one of Hilton's high school science students in Fort Mill, South Carolina USA in the 1970s. Rogers now lives in Sequim, Washington USA, where he is a field biologist with a Masters of Environmental Studies from Evergreen College.
